Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy Birthday to me!  Yesterday was my birthday and I have been giving lots of thought to age and birthdays!

There is a big difference between feeling “old” and feeling “age”. I like feeling “age” — it’s wisdom and a collection of memories and experiences and it’s good. It’s very good.

Remember when you were a kid and just couldn’t wait till your big day arrived?   Can you remember how special you felt when everyone sang to you and you blew out the candles?   Do you remember making a big wish when blowing out the candles?  Remember how excited you were to open your presents?

Are you still that excited about your birthday?

If you are like me, you have lost some of that childlike excitement about birthdays.  When I was 6, I couldn’t wait till I was 10.  When I was 10 I couldn’t wait to be 13.  Then when I reached 13 I couldn’t wait till 16 and on and on.  Then when I got be about 25 or 30, I started wishing time would stop or at least slow down.

Then when I hit 50, I decided it would be best to start counting backwards!  Although I can say that, the mirror tells me otherwise!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be having birthdays.  The alternative would be pretty sad.   I love life and I hope to be around for a long time so I do want to have those birthdays.

But do the years have to fly by so fast???   Time just seems to move faster and faster.   I’m fortunate, my family still makes a big deal about birthdays.  My husband and son always make the day so special with gifts, singing, etc.

I still feel a little thrill of excitement on the big day!  But then sometimes I think I’m still a kid or maybe in my second childhood.

Take a minute and let me know how you feel about birthdays or how you celebrate.

I’m 40 and still thrilled when my birthday comes!
    I was born! 😉

funny, very funny. I feel the same feeling, so much, now I prefer to forget that birthdays happen. Is not that I am very old, but rather somewhat worn.

    1. Yes, I know what you mean. But birthdays are so much better than the alternative.

  3. Happy Belated Birthday! Enjoyed your post. What you say is so true! I think as we get older, it is a reminder to live in the now and enjoy each moment. The past is history, the future a mystery, right now is a gift that is why it is called the present!

  4. You are correct. I find myself enjoying each moment more as I get older.
